A Propaganda Piece: Understanding It

Posted by DeadAnarchistPhil on January 10, 2011

Below is a post by a former U.S. Politician by the name of Robert Hall. Although I agree with some of his points I find a lot of his post to be typical of a U.S. Republican with rhetoric that is blatantly written to anger you and thus get you on side, the Republican side.

Like most Republicans/Libertarians they’re so adamant their ideology is right, and the best, but don’t seem to notice the huge flaws in it. And when ever someone points these out you’re a: “Damn Socialists/Libtard/Commie/Pinko” or some other kind of leftist.

I’m going to handle each of his points with a reply in green under each paragraph and show you how this type of post works.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I’ve worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven’t called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn’t inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there’s no retirement in sight, and I’m tired. Very tired.
He’s worked hard all his life and looked for job, even when the job market was bad. He also had health challenges, basically saying he didn’t need Government medical help. He’s just like you, he’s getting on common ground and creating an affinity with you. He’s also setting you up for the next paragraph.

I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth around” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it. They’re taking your hard-earned money and giving it to lazy people. Everyone on benefits/welfare is lazy. He’s setting you up to accept his own agenda which is keeping more of his pay and giving nothing to help those who legitimately need a helping hand in society. He assumes Voluntary charity will cover those in need. It only goes so far. He doesn’t take in to account the system the U.S. has is what’s contributing to poverty and joblessness i.e the “Lazy or Stupid”.

I’m tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to “keep people in their homes.” Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I’m willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the leftwing Congresscritters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community He Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them—with their own money. He try’s to show he’s willing to pay for legitimate cases of illness and home repossession, then say’s it’s their own fault and the fault of a Government made programme/business that helped them lose their homes. Fact is a lot of the people are the victims of this system, as were millions of others. Further more, Fannie and Freddie Mac wasn’t the only cause of the Financial crisis which caused people to lose their homes. The causes was the unregulated financial system his party brought a Bill in for, passed and which Bill Clinton signed in to action.

I’m tired of being told how bad America is by leftwing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the religious freedom and women’s rights of Saudi Arabia, the economy of Zimbabwe, the freedom of the press of China, the crime and violence of Mexico, the tolerance for Gay people of Iran, and the freedom of speech of Venezuela. Won’t multiculturalism be beautiful? He’s illicit a Patriotic reaction and trying to scare you by saying some people hate the U.S. and the U.S. will end up like the aforementioned places if you think America is a bad place and support the people mentioned. Fact is the U.S. doesn’t have much freedom of the press as media is owned and influenced by rival ideological and business groups, and these groups keep anything they don’t want said under wraps or don’t report it properly. The Republican Party doesn’t have much tolerance for Gay people. The U.S. has free speech but people fear to voice their opinion in public for fear of an argument or even violence.

I’m tired of being told that Islam is a “Religion of Peace,” when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family “honor;” of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren’t “believers;” of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for “adultery;” of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur’an and Shari’a law tells them to. He’s having a go at Political Correctness. However, he’s cherry picked the worse aspects of culture within Islam. This is a blanket generalisation over all Muslims, which is just wrong as not all Muslims are like or do the above. Political Correctness does need to be questioned and challenged, but not with blanket generalisations.

I believe “a man should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin.” I’m tired of being told that “race doesn’t matter” in the post-racial world of President Obama, when it’s all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of US Senators from Illinois. I think it’s very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote the emancipation proclamation. I just wish the black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and the individual and less in an all-knowing government. He’s saying race is still an issue in the U.S., even though there’s a black President. I’m not sure anyone fully disputes this fact. Positive discrimination goes against his Libertarian view of “best man for the job”, which shows his reaction. The problems with the black minority and not being allowed to talk about them, gives him more chance to box Political Correctness and advance his ideal of Family as a corner stone in society. It’s bashing of Obama and the Democrats while subtly offering his own black candidate for the job, who he thinks it more qualified.

I’m tired of a news media that thinks Bush’s fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama’s, at triple the cost, were wonderful. That thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress, that picked over every line of Bush’s military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his, that slammed Palin with two years as governor for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever. He thinks the media is against the Republican right and biased in the favour of Obama and Left-wing views. The fact is nearly all media orgs in the U.S. are biased one way or the other. The paragraph belies his mind-set that the right is a victimised group in the U.S.

Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn’t vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004. Again, he thinks most media organisations are against the Republican right and that Fox news is the only Media org that delivers the least biased news. He’s setting up Fox News a channel for you to visit and watch, so you’ll think like him.

I’m tired of being told that out of “tolerance for other cultures” we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America, while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance. What Saudi-Arabia is doing has nothing to do with multiculturalism and everything to do with Successive U.S. governments and U.S. energy conglomerates who allow it to happen because they  don’t want to upset their cash and Oil flow.

I’m tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore’s, and if you’re greener than Gore, you’re green enough. Another ideological staple of Republicanism, anything that requires taxes that isn’t spent on the Defence, Police, Fire dept or Roads is not wanted. Of course Climate change is happening but it can’t be fully shown if Human’s are the complete cause, but Republicans don’t care if it can be proved, they’re not being taxed for it.

I’m tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don’t think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I’m tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana. Another extension of the Libertarian idea that you stand on your own two feet and accept responsibility for your own actions in life.

I’m tired of illegal aliens being called “undocumented workers,” especially the ones who aren’t working, but are living on welfare or crime. What’s next? Calling drug dealers, “Undocumented Pharmacists”? And, no, I’m not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic and it’s been a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion. I’m willing to fast track for citizenship any Hispanic person who can speak English, doesn’t have a criminal record and who is self-supporting without family on welfare, or who serves honorably for three years in our military. Those are the citizens we need. Again, he doesn’t want to pay for benefits for people who are lazy. Doesn’t like crime either, then again who doesn’t? This comment fits in normally with many right and left-wing ideas.

I’m tired of latte liberals and journalists, who would never wear the uniform of the Republic themselves, or let their entitlement-handicapped kids near a recruiting station, trashing our military. They and their kids can sit at home, never having to make split-second decisions under life and death circumstances, and bad mouth better people than themselves. Do bad things happen in war? You bet. Do our troops sometimes misbehave? Sure. Does this compare with the atrocities that were the policy of our enemies for the last fifty years—and still are? Not even close. So here’s the deal. I’ll let myself be subjected to all the humiliation and abuse that was heaped on terrorists at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo, and the critics can let themselves be subject to captivity by the Muslims who tortured and beheaded Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or the Muslims who tortured and murdered Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins in Lebanon, or the Muslims who ran the blood-spattered Al Qaeda torture rooms our troops found in Iraq, or the Muslims who cut off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia, because the girls were Christian. Then we’ll compare notes. British and American soldiers are the only troops in history that civilians came to for help and handouts, instead of hiding from in fear. Appealing to Patriotism and makes the assumption that anyone who doesn’t join the army or support the war is some how un-American. Trys to legitimise western War crimes while painting in the enemy as worse. Al Qaeda was never in Iraq, those rooms were used by the Iraqi Republican guard to torture.

I’m tired of people telling me that their party has a corner on virtue and the other party has a corner on corruption. Read the papers—bums are bi-partisan. And I’m tired of people telling me we need bi-partisanship. I live in Illinois, where the “Illinois Combine” of Democrats and Republicans has worked together harmoniously to loot the public for years. And I notice that the tax cheats in Obama’s cabinet are bi-partisan as well. We shouldn’t Dilute Republican/Conservative ideology, because we’ll end with a Government like Illinois Combine. Also, note how he doesn’t implicate the wider Republican Party and doesn’t mention the Corporate Tax cheats. Fact of the matter is the whole system is rotten and corrupt and people like Robert Hill perpetuate it.

I’m tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor. Trying to show he’s on your level, the average joe’s level, and appealing to the Tea Party Movement.

Speaking of poor, I’m tired of hearing people with air-conditioned homes, color TVs and two cars called poor. The majority of Americans didn’t have that in 1970, but we didn’t know we were “poor.” The poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the dollars flowing. He thinks the “Socialists” in Government are using these words as an excuse to take more money off him. I’m sure they do use it like that some times.

I’m real tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination, or big-whatever for their problems. Just more Libertarian/Rep/Con ideology saying they don’t want their money going on the lazy. He doesn’t accept the fact that because of all the above mentioned things that some people really can’t get ahead in life. Also nothing about the U.S paying trillions to bail out the U.S. financial sector. By the rules of Capitalism and Libertarianism they should’ve been allowed to fail, and those responsible held to account.

Yes, I’m damn tired. But I’m also glad to be 63. Because, mostly, I’m not going to get to see the world these people are making. I’m just sorry for my granddaughter. He’s appealing to you to pick up the flag and carry on where he left off, for you to change things using his ideology. Again, this ideology in nature is ruthless and is actively the cause of many of  the problems in the country.

I don’t disagree with everything Mr. Hill is saying here, I was just taking this argument apart to show the obvious bias and the way he invites you to think the way he does. And to show how he misleads the reader in some areas.  When I write blogs you know they’re my opinion and I don’t try to get anyone to take on any of my opinions. I just want you to question everything and everyone. I want people to think for themselves and not take on set of ideas and opinions that aren’t their own, that defeats the object of thinking for yourself and learning about other opinions and ideas and then scrutinising them.

If more people were to think for themselves and question a Political party’s ideas and pieces like the above, before picking them up, taking them as their own and holding them up to world as what’s the best, then we wouldn’t be so deep in the Political mess we’re currently in with sky-high national debts because of public spending and financial bailouts of banks and business that were doing dodgy business dealings that would later cripple us.

QUESTION EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE!
